What are utility pants?

Utility pants are functional, workwear-inspired trousers built for movement and practicality — real pockets, durable construction, and a silhouette that transitions easily between a job site and everyday life. The AF DIY Pant is Androgynous Fox's take on the utility pant — a lighter, more refined version of the silhouette that keeps all the functional details while losing the rugged bulk. Think less heavy-duty workwear, more: fix a few things around the house, then go to lunch.

That's what we set out to build with the AF DIY Pant. And it just dropped.

Introducing the AF DIY Pant

A Utility Pant Built for Your Life

The AF DIY Pant takes the utility pant silhouette-  workwear heritage, functional details, real pockets, and builds it specifically for AFAB bodies. Medium rise, medium width leg, lightweight stretch fabric, and enough construction detail to earn the name. This is not a fashion-forward interpretation of a utility pant that sacrifices function for aesthetic. It's both.

Wear them on a job site. Wear them to a meeting. Pair them with the AF Knit Camp Button Up and you have an outfit that reads considered without trying. The DIY Pant moves between contexts the way most of us actually live, without needing to plan for it.

Why We Called It the DIY Pant

The name is a nod to the workwear DNA of the silhouette- the carpenter pant, the painter's trouser, the utility pant as a garment built around what you're actually doing, not just how you look doing it. The AF DIY Pant has a hammer loop. It has a grosgrain keychain loop sewn into the waistband with a multitool keychain pre-attached. These aren't decorative. They're the details that make a utility pant a utility pant.

And yes — the carabiner is intentional. If you know, you know.

The Construction

Fabric and Fit

The AF DIY Pant is constructed from a lightweight stretch twill. 96% cotton, 4% spandex. Stretch twill gives you the clean, structured look of a proper trouser with enough give to move comfortably through a full day. It holds its shape, drapes well, and doesn't feel heavy. This is a utility pant that works in warm weather without the stiffness of traditional workwear canvas.

The fit is medium rise with a fitted front waistband and an elastic back waistband. A combination that gives you a clean, flat front while accommodating the natural variation in how bodies actually fit clothing. The leg has a medium width from thigh through knee, opening to a generous leg length that sits well with a cuff. Not baggy, not restrictive. A proportioned silhouette that reads as intentional.

The Details That Matter

5-pocket construction gives you front slant pockets with a coin pocket on the right side, plus two back patch pockets. Real pockets. Properly sized. The kind that actually hold what you need to carry.

On the right side of the waistband, there's a grosgrain tape keychain loop. On the left, a 2-ply hammer loop sewn under the left back pocket and into the left side seam. Functional, properly placed, and exactly what you would expect from a utility pant.

The Colorways

Two Ways to Wear It

The AF DIY Pant launches in two colorways.

Olive Khaki is the natural colorway for a utility pant. Earthy, grounded, and versatile. It pairs with most of what's already in your wardrobe without asking much. This is the version that gets reached for without thinking.

Black crosses every context without hesitation. Polished enough to dress up, relaxed enough to work in. If you're choosing one pair, black earns its keep.

Both colorways are available in XS through 3XL.

How to Wear the AF DIY Pant

Styling Utility Pants That Actually Fit

For a casual day: wear them with a fitted white tee, your go-to sneakers, and the carabiner on the keychain loop doing its job. Relaxed and functional without looking like you tried too hard.

For something more considered: pair with the AF Knit Camp Button Up worn open over a tank, with clean leather shoes or loafers. The medium width leg and fitted waistband of these utility pants read as intentional alongside the contrast banding of the knit camp-  two pieces that work as a complete outfit, not just individual items.

For actual work: the pockets are real, the hammer loop is functional, the stretch twill moves with you, and the elastic back waistband means you're not adjusting all day. These utility pants can handle a full day of physical work and still look good at the end of it.

The Cuff

The inseam is cut generously. 28" in the base size, which means there's enough length to work a cuff. A single or double cuff at the ankle finishes the look well and gives you a tailored detail that elevates the look.

It's Here

The AF DIY Pant is available now in Olive Khaki and Black, sizes XS–3XL.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between utility pants and cargo pants?

Utility pants and cargo pants share workwear DNA but differ in silhouette and function. Cargo pants typically have large external side pockets and a looser, more relaxed fit. Utility pants tend toward a slimmer, more streamlined cut with fewer but more purposeful details — hammer loops, keychain loops, clean pocket placement. The AF DIY Pant sits firmly in the utility pant category: functional details, refined fit, no bulk.

Can utility pants be dressed up?

Utility pants are one of the more versatile bottoms in a wardrobe precisely because they sit between casual and polished. The key is fabric and fit — a lightweight stretch twill with a clean silhouette reads very differently than heavy canvas workwear. The AF DIY Pant was designed with that range in mind. Pair it with a button-up and leather shoes and it works for most occasions short of black tie.

What makes the AF DIY Pant different from traditional utility pants?

Most utility pants are built for heavy-duty work — stiff canvas, loose fit, and a silhouette that prioritizes durability over everything else. The AF DIY Pant takes the functional details of a utility pant — hammer loop, keychain loop, real pockets, carabiner — and builds them into a lighter, more refined version of the silhouette. Lightweight stretch twill instead of heavy canvas. A medium rise and medium width leg cut specifically for AFAB bodies instead of an adapted menswear fit. The result is a utility pant that works on a job site and still looks good at lunch.

Do utility pants work for petite or plus size bodies?

Fit is everything with utility pants — the silhouette can easily overwhelm a smaller frame or feel restrictive on a larger one if the proportions aren't right. The AF DIY Pant is sized S through 3XL with a medium rise and medium width leg designed to work across a range of body types. The elastic back waistband accommodates natural variation in fit without sacrificing the clean front silhouette. As with any trouser, the inseam length matters too — the DIY Pant is cut generously, making it easy to cuff to your preferred length.
